Productive garden with space to relax
This recently completed garden completely transformed a contemporary new-build plot into a richly planted, highly functional retreat - designed to support everyday life from morning through to evening while remaining immersive, generous, and deeply personal.
The brief was ambitious for the available space. The garden needed to accommodate productive gardening, cooking, entertaining, pets, relaxation, and practical everyday functions, while also creating a strong connection with nature throughout the seasons. The challenge was to bring these elements together without allowing the garden to feel crowded or overly designed.
Planting sits at the heart of the scheme. My client is a passionate gardener with a particular love of soft, naturalistic planting, evergreen structure, foliage contrast and wildlife-friendly species that are safe for pets. A carefully edited palette, used with repetition and restraint, provides cohesion across the garden, while layers of perennials, shrubs, productive planting and structural elements will develop increasing depth, texture and seasonal interest as the garden matures.
The design also makes space for productive gardening without compromising the garden’s sense of retreat. An attractive greenhouse, raised growing areas, composting and practical storage are integrated alongside generous planting, with circulation carefully considered to make everyday gardening straightforward and enjoyable.
Social spaces were equally important. At the far end of the garden, a secluded seating area provides a destination for long summer evenings, with provision for outdoor cooking, gathering around a firepit and enjoying the garden as the light changes throughout the day. Screening, vertical planting and a strategically positioned tree create intimacy, dappled shade and a greater sense of enclosure, while softening the boundaries characteristic of many new-build gardens.

Materials and hard landscaping have been deliberately restrained so that planting remains the dominant experience. Every transition between surfaces, structures and planting has been carefully resolved to create a garden that works practically, yet feels cohesive, calm and natural rather than heavily landscaped.
The scheme also incorporates bespoke elements designed specifically for the garden, including a custom-designed shed and associated furniture, developed in collaboration with local craftspeople. Working closely with a skilled team of local landscapers and makers throughout the project has allowed the design to be realised with the level of detail, craftsmanship and finish that it demands.
This is a garden designed to make a relatively modest footprint work exceptionally hard — not through excess, but through thoughtful planning, layered functionality, careful editing and a strong sense of atmosphere.
The result is a garden that does much more than accommodate its many requirements: it creates a beautiful, immersive setting for living, gardening, entertaining and connecting with nature.
