Naturalistic under-tree planting scheme featuring sculpture, alliums and purples

This garden design explores a naturalistic style that showcases sculpture, complements the architecture of the house, and creates a calm, timeless outdoor space with year-round interest. Classic quarry tiles formed the terrace in the initial planting plan featured here, chosen for their enduring character and their ability to blend with existing structures. The edges soften into gravel and planting, creating a gentle transition between built and planted areas while maintaining practical access to the dining space.

The planting design combines informal grassy textures with a framework of white-flowering evergreens, creating a garden that is both visually rich and easy to maintain. Groundcover planting acts as a living mulch, adding colour and seasonal interest while supporting wildlife and reducing maintenance. A mix of evergreens, grasses, bulbs and perennials ensures interest throughout the year.

Gravel is repeated beneath the sculpture to visually connect the lower terrace with the upper planting area. Here the garden becomes a continuous planted landscape, where low mounds and evergreen mats provide a textured backdrop to ornamental grasses. Without formal paths, the space prioritises planting and visual enjoyment while still allowing practical access for maintenance.

The client’s request for grasses and alliums was met through careful selection of species and cultivar suited to the conditions in this garden.
